Impressive technology that is beyond what others offer
I bought this device to monitor my cardiac stress level while exercising. To my knowledge, it is the only device on the market that essentially functions like a real-time cardiac exercise stress test. While it does not make that claim for obvious FDA reasons, it performs many of the same functions, albeit using the word “heart strain” as opposed to “cardiac ischemia detection using ST-segment changes”, which is fair. Basically, ST-segment changes greater than a certain amount can indicate cardiac ischemia from coronary artery disease and risk of sudden cardiac death while exercising. Jim Fixx, the exercise guru who wrote the 1977 best-selling book The Complete Book of Running died of a heart attack while running at age 52. The purpose of a $700 cardiac exercise stress test is to detect this in a highly monitored setting with a nurse, etc. For daily exercise, I think a device like this one is quite useful. While not as accurate as a 12-lead cardiac exercise stress test, it does capture real-time EKG data, monitor real-time ST-segment changes, and you can configure it to vibrate if ST-segment changes reach a certain level, and then dial back your exercise accordingly to stay in a safe range. Some degree of cardiac stress is inevitable with exercise. The device has worked great–easy to use, comfortable, and it gives me tremendous peace of mind when I am exercising. It is not a guarantee and it is not fool-proof, of course, but it is better than nothing. I’m really glad I bought it and am thinking of buying it as a gift for some friends.

Great Device
Initially, I had some issue authenticating for a day due to technical issues, so the device was essentially a paperweight during setup. That experience was frustrating and highlighted real gaps in their authentication flow and error handling. However, after providing detailed and constructive feedback, I was genuinely surprised by how quickly and thoughtfully the Fourth Frontier team responded. They acknowledged the issue, explained the root cause, and outlined concrete mitigation steps and roadmap improvements. Not many companies take technical feedback this seriously or move this fast, and that responsiveness was refreshing and earned my reconsideration. Now that everything is resolved, I use the Frontier X2 daily. From a technology standpoint, this device is in a completely different category than standard wearables. The level of insight it provides into cardiac performance during high intensity workouts is something I have not seen elsewhere. The ability to capture and export raw ECG data is especially valuable, as it allows me to perform my own deep analysis using custom tools and applications. For anyone serious about performance, physiology, or personal research, that capability alone is priceless. This is a powerful device built for serious users. While the initial onboarding experience needs continued improvement, the underlying technology is excellent, and the team’s willingness to listen and improve gives me confidence in the product’s future.

Great resource for those with AF
As an athlete having had two ablations for AF, this is a primary source for gathering all my HR workout data. While my Garmin can capture AF if I stop, remain still, use two fingers on the bezel, and think pleasant thoughts for 30 seconds…this Frontier monitor continues to capture HR data even if I am not aware there are erroneous rhythms. This can be an invaluable source of information if a significant event occurs. After eight months of nearly daily use, the unit has been flawless. While the accuracy may not be at the research level, it does provide good, accurate, long-view trends. My only complaint are the number of features it can measure vs. having to pay for a “premium” level subscription in order to view them.

24 hour continuous ECG recording.
This pairs to most fitness devices via Bluetooth and shares data with most fitness apps as well. It has lost of built functionality, records ECG continuously up to 24 hour, set up and lower HR alarms, mark significant HR events, download ECG to PDF, upload ECG file to MyChart which your cardiologist can access, and view health trends. All athletes should be wearing a Frontier X2 as they are more likely to experience irregular heart arrhythmia such as Afib. Smart watches can only record a 30sec ECG snapshot was as the Frontier X2 can record a continuous ECG during the whole workout. Since I’ve been diagnosed with Afib this has been a game changer for me over a standard HR monitor strap. It is a heart value for the money. Price range $378-$599.

Total Disappointment – Frontier X2 is Unreliable and Poorly Supported
The Frontier X2 heart rate monitor has been an absolute nightmare. From day one, it consistently failed to work properly. I spent weeks troubleshooting with tech support, only to be told repeatedly that the issue was with Garmin. That’s simply not true—I tested the Frontier X2 on multiple Garmin watches, and the failure was identical across all of them.Hoping it was just a compatibility issue, I tried the monitor with a NordicTrack treadmill, and guess what? Same exact failure. It’s crystal clear this device is the problem, not the equipment it’s paired with. What made this even worse was the customer service. Every time I asked to send the unit back for a replacement, the question was ignored. Not once was I offered a return or exchange—just deflection and blame-shifting.This product is completely unreliable, poorly supported, and absolutely not worth the money. I strongly advise anyone considering the Frontier X2 to look elsewhere unless you enjoy wasting your time, energy, and patience.

If your goal is to build endurance and improve marathon pace, Frontier X2 is one of the best tools you can use.The biggest advantage is accuracy from the source—it measures your heart directly from the chest, reducing noise and errors seen in wrist-based devices. This matters a lot for Zone 2 training. Even a small error in heart rate can push you into the wrong zone, and that completely changes the training stimulus. With Frontier X2, I know I’m exactly where I need to be.After consistent training, I’ve seen:Lower heart rate at the same paceBetter endurance on long runsLess fatigue accumulationThe VO2 max tracking is also much more stable, and the recovery metrics (especially HRV) help structure my weekly training better. It’s not flashy—but it’s incredibly effective if you care about real performance gains.

Frontier X2 Smart Heart Rate MonitorLove it. Fantastic bit of kit. Easy to use and set up. Connected to my phone easily. Connected to my Garmin watch and my Polar watch easily. Only slightly larger than a normal heart-rate monitor. Records heart rate and ECG. I can review the traces afterwards and compare with how I felt. I can press the button on the monitor to mark an event if I feel it. Gives a live read out of heart strain on my phone. I’m not sure what heart strain it, but seems useful.

Frontier X2 helps you stay consistent. The accurate heart rate + recovery tracking (HRV, strain) gives a complete picture of how hard to train.Real-time zone feedback keeps workouts focused, and I’ve avoided overtraining as a result. It’s helped me train smarter, recover better, and steadily improve my marathon pace.
